Improving literacy for sustainable development

Mariamma, India

I regret not having an education – “I’m Mariamma, and I’m 21 years old. I got married when I was 18 years old. I do not have an education and I regret it. Had I studied, my problems would have been solved, at least to some extent. We are very poor, so, my education would have given me an employment opportunity. Now since I have no education, I have to resort to working in the fields, and I get paid rupees 100 per day. Women get paid rupees 100 whereas men get paid rupees 300 per day. Work in the fields is available throughout the month, except for the 4 months in summer. We have to be at home and look for other means of income during the summer months. The government employs us in building roads, digging trenches etc. and pays us rupees 100 per day. Had I been educated, I would’ve been able to earn more.” Mariamma, India.
